Lot 13: Woodbury School Frontier Knife by Verlin Cossel
Faithful auction supporter Verlin Cossel has once again donated an outstanding example of his work to this year’s CLF Fundraising Auction. Cossel’s frontier knife is a pleasing blend of solid craftsmanship, pleasing aesthetics, and outright creativity.
Cossel has created a stellar example of the quintessential antler-handled knife which also pays homage to the late Hershel House. House was a legend in the Longrifle Culture, graciously mentoring dozens of new craftsmen, including Cossel, into the skills and design themes of the “Woodbury School.”
Cossel hand forged this Woodbury-style knife on Hershel House’ anvil. The robust 8 ½”-long-blade was created from 1095 steel, and the entire knife measures nearly 14” in length. The blade features a rugged Woodbury patina, and is stamped with a maker’s mark, a heart and star, and deer tracks. The blade’s tang goes through the antler handle and is peened on the sterling silver end cap. The end cap also sports a small engraved hunter’s star.
Cossel’s knife is accompanied with a handmade sheath and Verlin’s hallmark custom display stand. The heavy-duty sheath was made from cowhide and emblazoned with decorative stamping that matches the pattern on the knife. The display stand was made from antique repurposed barn wood, and tastefully sports an image of Hershel House’ legendary cabin and workshop.
Cossel’s donation for this year’s auction affords collectors the opportunity to own a fine Cossel original, but also pays fitting homage to one of the Longrifle Culture’s most influential masters. As Cossel points out, he endeavored to create “a tribute to our friend, Hershel House, and bring some attention to the Woodbury School that he formed to carry on after he was gone.”
