Lot 17: SOAW Set by: SOAW Artists
This lot is something special! We approached the Southern Ohio Artisans Workship last year about completing a firearm for this year’s auction. SOAW is a collective of experienced artists that pass down their knowledge and experience through classes. Anyone can sign up to learn a variety of early American art skills– including powderhorns and engraving, rifle building and knifemaking.
The instructors and students have worked hard and not only put together a gorgeous rifle but a full set of accoutrements to match. The rifle began life as a Kibler Woodsrunner Kit in .50 cal. Gary Ludwig and James Honaker assembled, carved, engraved and finished the kit into a work of art! The Virginia style hunting bag was made by Maryellen Pratt, using a deer hide that was bark tanned by Christopher Ireland. Christopher also forged a bag knife and added an elk antler handle for the set. The Virginia style powder horn for this set was made by William “Scotty” Scott using a raw horn donated by Gary Ludwig. The applied tip horn was then engraved by Kathy England. Finally, Kerry Masarik donated a wonderful strap for the powderhorn. This unique collaboration embodies both the art of the longrifle and the relationships between artists that form the core of the CLA and CLF.
