Lot 15: “Traveler” Hunting Bag & Powder Horn
This set is a unique expression of the art, community and history of the longrifle culture. It began as a community engagement activity to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War and muzzleloading culture. The idea was to create a contemporary horn named Traveler that could be taken on adventures, with the travels posted online using the hashtag #traveler1776.
John Beck coordinated an amazing group of artists. The cow horn was donated by Gerry Messmer of Powderhorns & More and was built by Adam Daub of 18th Century Arms. The engraving was done by Eric Carlson and finished with Beck Flintlock’s 18th Century Finish. The engraving features song lyrics from Pennsylvania Long by Hawken Horse. The bag was made by Robert Shuffelen. It features hand-sewn cowhide with hand-tooled designs, a hand-forged buckle and a cast button.
Since it was finished, Traveler has been at Martin Meylin’s Gunshop in Lancaster Pa, the Kempton Gun Fair, with Muzzleloader Magazine, Hawken Horse Band, Ethan of I Love Muzzleloading, taken to the Cumberland Gap with Flintlock Operator, and was last taken to Williamsburg, VA by Anthony Vinegar.
